IMI Electric Vehicle Technician Full Route

The Electric Vehicle route is intended for Technicians whose job role involves the inspection, maintenance and repair of light vehicles, as well as those involved in accident repair bodyshops (i.e. MET, Panel, Paint, VDA).

IMI Level 1 Award in Electric/hybrid Vehicle Awareness (VRQ)

This qualification is for training providers and employers to deliver to learners in the 16-18 and 19+ age groups. These learners will have an interest in gaining the knowledge to work safely within the automotive retail industry as it continues to see an increase in electric/hybrid vehicles entering the workplace.
It is therefore designed to provide learners with an introduction to the knowledge of safe working practices, the dangers surrounding, and the precautions required to avoid potential injury when near electric/hybrid vehicles.

IMI Level 2 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance Activities (VRQ)

This qualification is for training providers and employers to deliver to learners in the 16-18 and 19+ age groups. These learners will have an interest in gaining the knowledge to work safely when carrying out routine maintenance activities on electric/hybrid vehicles.
It is therefore designed for those people who may encounter electric/hybrid vehicles within a routine maintenance situation. It also contains the knowledge and skills required to work safely around a vehicle that may have had damage to its high energy/electrical system. This Award sized qualification offers an introduction to this specialised industry sector which in addition to complimenting their current industry qualifications and experience, will enable them to continue to work safely within their role.

IMI Level 2 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Hazard

This VRQ is designed for those people who may encounter accident damaged or brokendown vehicles, e.g. emergency services and roadside recovery operators. It contains the knowledge required to work safely around a vehicle's high & low voltage electrical system and electric drive train system.

IMI Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement (VRQ)

This is a Level 3 vocational qualification which provides individuals with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to work on heavy electric/hybrid vehicles including bus and coach.

Level 2 Resistance Spot Welding

This module covers the welding requirement for IMI Accreditation and is a prerequisite for candidates wishing to achieve IMI Accreditation Panel Technician/Senior Technician.
The certification must be 'current' (issued within the last two years) and must be quality assured by an Awarding Organisation that is recognised by the IMI.

Welding/Brazing/Bonding & Riveting AOM030

This module ensures the technician has the knowledge, skills and ability to carry out replacement of a welded section within the construction of a vehicle bodyshell.
The technician will be required to cut a specified section from a welded panel (i.e. a sill section) without causing damage to other vehicle systems or the vehicle structure.
The technician will cut a section from a new panel and replace the section into the vehicle body using techniques such as spot welding, MAG welding, MIG braze and bonding and riveting. The technician must be able to ‘dress’ the welds to a finish where the repaired section is ready to accept body filler to a depth of no more than 2mm.

IMI (ATA) Bodyshop Technician Auto Glazing

A single day assessment consisting of 3 modules. These modules will require completing to a required standard.

IMI (ATA) ADAS – Calibration Full Route

AOM230 is intended for Technicians whose job role involves working with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
This unique module is designed to ensure that the technician has the ability to calibrate Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). It demonstrates the Technician’s ability to identify and correctly interpret information relating to a specific vehicle and its ADAS features to determine which method of calibration is required.

Level 3 Refrigerant Handling (VRQ)

This Defra-approved qualification offers a single unit solution that provides experienced automotive Mobile Air Conditioning (MAC) technicians with evidence that they meet the minimum F-gas requirement (EC842/2006 and annex EC307/2008).

Level 3 Four Wheel Alignment Return to Specification AOM012

This module is to assess the competence of the candidate’s knowledge, skill and ability to check the vehicles four-wheel alignment / geometry. This will include ensuring that the vehicle is initially set up to the correct specifications and then using industry recognised wheel alignment equipment record the readings obtained from the vehicle and compare them against the vehicle manufacturer data.
The candidate will be required to reset the vehicle’s wheel alignment to the vehicle manufacturer specification.

Learning that meets delegates needs

Steve works at FMGRS’ Ilkeston site as a Quality Controller. He visited the Technical Training Centre (TTC) to complete an IMI Level 2 course on EV and Hybrid Vehicle Awareness.

Steve is profoundly deaf, so the TTC team worked with a British Sign Language interpreter to make the course fully accessible for him and our hearing impaired community.

We asked Steve about his role and his day at the TTC, he said:

“My day-to-day role is Quality Control at FMGRS Ilkeston where I ensure that the completed repairs match the job card. I enjoy the ever-changing technology in today’s cars, and working with colleagues to maintain and improve the quality at site. I really appreciated my training day and the ‘EV/Hybrid level 2’ course. I found it very interesting, learning about new technology, and the terminology!”

Karl, General Manager at FMGRS Ilkeston added:

“The team couldn't have been more accommodating, really putting Steve at ease and ensuring the whole course was really accessible. I’m glad we were able to work together to arrange a BSL interpreter for the day. Steve's a really valued member of the team and I’m delighted the course met his needs.”

And the best news? Steve passed the course with a Distinction!

Empowering Educators

As well as Technicians, we also welcome tutors and mentors to our training centre courses.

In 2023 tutors from York College visited the FMGRS Technical Training Centre where they took part in ADAS training to boost their awareness of the equipment and systems. This increased knowledge helped them in their role as tutors by enabling them to pass on more in-depth knowledge to their students studying motor vehicle engineering.

Here’s what one of the York College team, Guy, said: “The ADAS training we received this week from Paul and Chris was fantastic. The two days were well structured, it was great to use another type of ADAS calibration equipment and the knowledge Paul delivered gave us a much better understanding of ADAS systems than we arrived with. By FMGRS allowing us as external trainees to complete this course, it will enable us to train our own students - it was great to see the equipment in a body repair context.”

We’re delighted to facilitate and empower education providers to deliver high quality, fundamental training to the industry talent of the future.
